Vanessa Vales, Health Science Academy Alumnus 2006, is the new Health Science Academy Middle School Coordinator at the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health. While she is working at AAIUH, she is also completing her Master's of Arts in Teaching in Adolescent Science at CUNY Brooklyn College.
Ms. Vales attended Northeastern University in Boston, MA. She graduated in 2011 with a degree in Biology with a minor in Secondary Education. As a Scholar of the Health Science Academy, Vanessa learned a lot, from research skills to health disparities. While at Northeastern, Vanessa started to tutor students and became interested in secondary education--she decided to enroll in some classes and gain firsthand experience. After taking her first class, she realized that she loved to teach and she saw that there was a need for her in science teaching.
Now, Ms. Vales works at AAIUH re-vamping the middle school curriculum on exploring health careers (click here) so it can be ready by the time classes start in November!
