Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health

Community Health Empowerment guides and unifies all our work. The Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health, located in multi-ethnic Brooklyn, collaborates with community members to design, incubate and replicate neighborhood-based interventions that address health conditions disproportionately affecting minorities. Recognizing the complexity of the economic and social determinants of health, we partner with a wide variety of grassroots and institutional organizations to provide

  1. Culturally appropriate after-school programming to increase the number of minority healthcare practitioners,
  2. Outreach initiatives in trusted nontraditional venues, such as barber shops, salons and Laundromats
  3. Research and advocacy performed through a campus-community partnership with Brooklyn-based SUNY Downstate Medical Center.
