Dr. Marilyn Fraser received the HERITAGE HEALTHCARE LEADERSHIP AWARD, recognizing a leader who has made a significant impact in their healthcare field, forever changing the way care systems work through new models, processes and pathways.

Sponsored by Heritage Provider Network (HPN), a leading physician-led managed care organization, the awards recognize the best of today’s healthcare clinicians, entrepreneurs, administrators and researchers who are making measurable improvements in access to care, the quality of care and long-term affordability. The focus of the Heritage awards mirrors the long-time interests of HPN’s founder and chief executive, Dr. Richard Merkin.

Community groups and nonprofits often approach mental health from the perspectives of social determinants of health and population health. Data help identify high-risk patients, but it’s the personal touch—delivered by trusted peer counselors from the neighborhood—that is critical to supporting mental illness. To address the stigma of mental illness, for example, the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health trains Brooklyn barbers and hairdressers to talk with customers about the issue.

“A lot of our communities, especially immigrants, are becoming more receptive to having that conversation,” said Dr. Marilyn Fraser, the nonprofit’s chief executive and winner of the 2019 Heritage Healthcare Leadership Award.

Heritage Provider Network and Crain’s Custom presented the award at a luncheon in Manhattan on May 20, 2019.
